Last time my friends asked me what should we do in Jaipur, I came up with a way too long list of amazing experiences we could have! 20 to be completely honest. And this time they have made the commitment of asking me what treks in Himachal Pradesh we could be taking in these next summer months. Quite the adventurers my friends are.

But me being me, trekking in Himachal sounded like quite the fascinating subject to be doing some deep digging on. And lo and behold – I came up with 10 fantastic treks that we can very much spend our time and money on. Not too much money even!

KASOL – GRAHAN TREK

The Unseen Trail - Grahan

Why This Trek?

Because there is no better place to go trekking in India and escape the humdrum of typical civilization. Explore one of the interiors of Parvati Valley and submerge yourself in its sights and sounds.

The best thing about this is that not many people know about this quiet secluded little village so if you have been putting off meditating for a while now, then the water smoothened rocks near the Grahan waterfall is definitely the place to start exploring treks in Himachal Pradesh. What say?

The relaxing hot water springs, the panoramic views of the Himalayas, the wild horses grazing on bright green grasslands, the adorable cafes and cottages of Tosh, the bustling local culture of Kasol and the sweet sweet bliss of traversing through acres of beautiful and untouched forests are just an added accessory.

A simple reason – it is by far India’s most dramatic and visually stimulating trek. The Hampta Pass trek rises from the lush verdant Kullu valley, climbs through the grazing lands of Balu ka Ghera and lands trekkers in the desert oasis that is the Lahaul valley.

Because you do not have to lust over European and Swiss grasslands anymore! You can find gorgeous, expansive, abundantly green high altitude alpine meadows right here in your friendly neighbourhood Kullu valley.

The Bhrigu Lake trek is such a top priority on any traveller’s list because not only does this trek give you the chance to see one of India’s most big, blue and beautiful glacial lakes – but it also takes you through some of the most mesmerising alpine grasslands where horses roam free (just like in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara). Trekking in Himachal has never been this exciting.

Why This Trek?

Because if you are anywhere near McleodGanj, then the Triund trek is a must do on the list. Skipping this would be like eating popcorn without butter. The trek starts from the vibrant Tibetian town of McleodGanj, makes its way through beautiful oak and rhododendron forests and finally opens up to the large open expanse of the Triund hilltop.

If the views of the entire Kangra valley are not enough to satiate you, just pitch a tent and wait till the sun drops. It will take your jaw with it. Treks in Himachal may be many but Triund is one of a kind.

Because located at a height of almost 10,000 feet, the Kareri Lake trek is absolutely perfect for all you adventurers looking for the taste of the extreme without spending a week in the mountains. This shallow freshwater lake is approached by rocky grasslands and scenic sub-tropical forests.

The Kangra district is also famous for its ingenious tea brews so you definitely can enjoy some of that when you stop in Reoti. This trek is bound to leave you speechless because it is very hard to imagine that such treks in Himachal Pradesh lie only a few ten hours from the city.

Surrounded by gorgeous mountains, verdant hiking trails, shimmering waterfalls, glistening lakes and the UNESCO certified Great Himalayan National Park. And for the wildlife enthusiasts, this place is a treasure trove because of its rich flora and fauna that includes more than its fair share of beautiful exotic birds.

Most of the time when people think of trekking in Himachal, they assume that it is going to be a week-long affair and that would not be able to make time or money for it. But as my research indicates, this is clearly not so. There are numerous treks in Himachal Pradesh that can be done over the weekend or even for 3-4 days.
