POV: You have reached Rishikesh. No matter who you ask and about anything, one name constantly pops up - Laxman Jhula. Whoever comes here has at least one selfie while standing on this bridge! Toh… kya hai ye Laxman Jhula? And why exactly is it called Laxman Jhula?
It is believed that during Ramayana, lord Laxman crossed the river from here using a rope bridge. But, is it really true? Or is it just another folklore? Just grab a cup of chai, find a cosy spot at The Hosteller Rishikesh Neelkanth, and let’s go back to the Treta Yuga!
The mythological legend of Laxman Jhula Rishikesh Uttarakhand
Long before Rishikesh became a hotspot for yogis, it was a sacred land deeply rooted in Hindu mythology. As per the Ramayana, after rescuing Sita, Lord Ram, Laxman, and Sita were returning to Ayodhya. When they arrived at the fast-flowing Ganga in Rishikesh, there was nothing to cross. But Laxman, known for his unwavering courage found a way. It is believed that he used a jute rope bridge to cross the holy river. This act left a mark on the place, making it spiritually important.
Even today, the spiritual aura here is palpable, much like the energy you feel while watching the sunrise from the rooftop of The Hosteller Rishikesh Neelkanth.

The historical construction of Laxman Jhula Rishikesh Uttarakhand
A jute bridge was built to honour lord Laxman in 1889 at that very site. The same was washed away during the floods of 1924. However, recognising the religious and historical importance of the site, the British constructed a 284-foot-long iron suspension bridge in 1929. Named Laxman Jhula, the bridge became a gateway for pilgrims and travellers. For nearly a century, it stood as a symbol of faith and resilience, much like the adventurous spirit of those who check into The Hosteller Rishikesh Neelkanth.

The present-day status of Laxman Jhula Rishikesh Uttarakhand
All good things must evolve! After serving its purpose for almost 90 years, Laxman Jhula Rishikesh Uttarakhand was permanently closed in July 2019. Why? The weakening structure led to rising safety concerns. A new stronger bridge is in progress. Even today, the site of Laxman Jhula continues to attract thousands of visitors keeping the legacy and the faith alive.
Even though you can’t walk on it anymore, standing near the bridge and watching the sunrise of Ganga is still a beautiful experience. It’s a reminder that some stories never fade, they flow just like the river itself.
