If you're visiting Dalhousie, St. John’s Church is a must-see. But, what if I told you it’s more than just a historic landmark? Step inside and you might hear whispers, even when no one else is around. Look up and you may find the stained-glass windows glowing mysteriously in the middle of the night (without any light source). Coincidence? Or something more sinister? Locals say that St. John’s Church is haunted. But is there any truth to these ghostly tales, or are they just age-old myths?

It is time to uncover the mysteries for yourself and if you dare, even swap ghost stories with fellow travellers at The Hosteller Dalhousie.

The legend of the wandering priest

Myth:

According to the locals, a British priest mysteriously vanished one night, never to be seen again. But did he check out of life or just out of town? No one knows. Locals swear he never really left, and visitors claim to hear faint hymns in the empty church at odd hours.

Reality:

We dug a lot (okay, mostly in old records), and guess what? There is no official reports of a missing priest. However, according to historian Rajendra Thakur, a British caretaker from the early 1900s died suddenly (due to illness). Coincidence? Maybe.

The ‘glowing’ stained glass windows

Myth:

Picture this: It’s late at night, the church is locked, and yet, the stained-glass windows depicting Jesus and other biblical figures start to glow. A divine miracle or something straight out of a horror movie?

Reality:

I hate to break it to the thrill-seekers, but science has an answer. The glass used in the church contains phosphorescent minerals that absorb sunlight during the day and release it slowly, giving off a glowing effect. So, while it may look supernatural, it’s just a natural phenomenon doing its thing. (Sorry, no ghosts included.)

Unexplained whispers & footsteps

Myth:

Ever had the feeling you’re being watched? Well, visitors, even the security personnel have reported that when they visit St. John’s Church, they don't just feel it, they hear it. Soft whispers, footsteps echoing through empty pews, and the sensation of an unseen presence are common complaints. Some say it’s the ghosts of long-gone British officers still standing guard over their place of worship.

Reality:

Acoustics can be a tricky thing. St. John’s Church, built with thick stone walls, has a way of amplifying even the faintest sounds. The footsteps could be distant echoes from the busy Mall Road nearby (creating an illusion of movement inside the church).

Nevertheless, as per one of the investigations, one local night watchman refused to stay past midnight. He says he had seen shadowy figures moving inside. Psychological fear or paranormal proof? That’s for you to decide.

The ‘Cursed’ Bell Tower

Myth:

Ring the church bell at midnight and you’re in for some serious bad luck (at least, that’s what the legend says)! Some extreme versions of the tale even said that those who dare to ring it have fallen severely ill. Sounds scary right?

Reality:

Historically, church bells were rung at night only during emergencies or funerals. Over time, the association with bad news may have turned into superstition.

Conclusion: Dare to visit?

So, is St. John's Church truly haunted, or is it just a beautiful colonial building wrapped in a blanket of myths? Well, that depends on who you ask. Some believe that these tales are just tricks of sound, light, and a little too much imagination. Others swear there’s something unnatural inside the church. One thing’s for sure, whether you come for the history or the mystery, a stay at The Hosteller Dalhousie will place you right at the heart of the legend.
