You’ve made a great choice by considering this as your travel option! Call it Alleppey, Allepurza, or India’s own Venice—this little gem in Kerala is a vibe. I was there two years ago, and let me tell you, my heart is still full. Wondering what’s there in Appepy beyond houseboats? Well, my friend, this blog is for you. A complete list of things to do in Alleppey, from an Alleppey return to first-time travellers. With love and a packet of banana chips in hand!

1. Explore the backwaters

Let me tell you how it feels to be on the backwaters. You’re in the middle of calm waters, and all you can hear is the splash of paddles, birds calling, and the chatter of locals. It’s like hearing the real sound of Kerala without any filter. You’ll see people living their everyday lives, washing clothes, fishing, kids on their way to school. On both sides, you’ve got traditional Kerala homes and endless green paddy fields. You have four ways to experience this! By houseboat, shikara ride, canoe ride, or kayaking. Read about the Alleppy itinerary to know more.

2. Try fishing like a local

You’ll see locals fishing pretty much everywhere. Just ask if you can join them! Most of them are friendly and might even show you how it’s done. Or, carry your fishing hook and try your luck. Let’s see what you got!

3. Explore beaches and lighthouse

After all that backwater cruising, it’s time to hit the beaches.

Alleppey Beach is the perfect spot to chill. It’s usually lively with locals and vendors selling spicy raw mango slices sprinkled with chili and salt. Nearby, there’s the Alleppey Lighthouse, open from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM. Climb the top for a stunning view of the Arabian Sea and Alleppey town. It’s a bit of a leg workout, but worth it!

And if you’re up for more, Marari Beach is just a short drive away. It’s quieter, cleaner, and perfect for a lazy day doing absolutely nothing.

4. Visit Kuttanad

Stand in the heart of Kuttanad, and it feels like time has slowed down just for you. Green paddy fields, canals, and farmers working in fields below sea level—yes, you heard that right! You can take a cycle ride through the area or just walk. You’ll spot duck farms, toddy shops, and loads of coconut trees. The area is sooo peaceful and picture-perfect and gives you a glimpse into the everyday life of Kerala’s countryside.

5. Take Ayurvedic spa

After a day out in the sun, nothing beats a good Ayurvedic massage. Alleppey has plenty of authentic spas where they use herbal oils and ancient techniques. Even if you’re not someone who usually gets massages, give this one a try. Your body (and soul) will thank you.

6. Visit Pathiramanal Island

Pathiramanal means ‘Sands of midnight,’ but it’s all bright and chirpy during the day. A tiny island on the backwaters, is a paradise for bird lovers, home to over 90 species of local and migratory birds. You can spot herons, egrets, kingfishers, and many more while strolling through its quiet paths.

7. Witness the snake boat race

If you’re in Alleppey during August or September, don’t miss the Nehru Trophy Snake Boat Race. It’s madness in the best way giant boats with over 100 rowers racing like their lives depend on it. The energy, the crowds, the drum beats are pure goosebumps. Even if you miss the big race, many villages practice year-round, and you might catch them rowing in sync.

8. Try authentic Kerala food

Alleppey has plenty of fine dining spots, but the real flavours are found in the small, local restaurants by the backwaters. These family-run places serve fresh, home-cooked meals. If you’re a seafood lover, this is heaven. The food here feels like a warm hug after a long day.

Wrapping it up

With this list in hand, your trip to Alleppey will be nothing short of amazing. And you will feel the same as I felt while coming back from here. That feeling when your heart is full but then you are also sad that you need to leave. And a little hope in your heart that you want to come back here again.
Hoping to see you soon!
