1. Once upon a time, it was called Devil’s Kitchen

Before it was known as Gunaa Caves, the locals called it Devil’s Kitchen and no, it’s not a name you’d give something cute. The eerie name comes from tales of strange disappearances and echoes that never quite sound like your own voice. Legend has it that evil spirits cooked up chaos inside the cave and hence the haunting title.

2. The Pandavas were (apparently) the first residents

Legend has it that the Pandavas were the first to take shelter in what we now call the Gunaa Caves during their exile. Locals believe the caves once served as their hidden refuge, adding a touch of ancient mythology to the mystery that surrounds this eerie spot.

3. It became famous because of one intense love story

Gunaa Caves, once called Devil’s Kitchen, became famous after the Tamil movie Gunaa was shot there. The film’s climax, where Kamal Haasan’s character jumps into the caves, gave the spot a haunting reputation. After the movie’s release, the caves were renamed Gunaa Caves. Since then, it has drawn both film lovers and curious travelers, though it’s now closed to the public for safety reasons.

4. People say the cave breathes

Many people say the Gunaa Caves “breathe” because of the strange sounds and air movement inside. Wind flows through the deep, narrow tunnels, creating a whooshing sound that feels like the caves are alive. This natural effect has led to spooky stories and added to the cave’s mystery.

5. Not all who enter, leave the same

While it’s now fenced off and restricted for safety reasons, there was a time when tourists could enter the deep, narrow fissures inside. Some say they got lost. Others came out deeply shaken. The maze-like structure, zero visibility, and an eerie silence have earned the place a spooky rep that’s hard to shake off.

6. Even the forest around it feels enchanted

It’s not just the caves. The pine forest around Gunaa Caves is thick, foggy, and silent like the backdrop of a supernatural movie. Whether it’s the crisp mountain air or something more mystical, you’ll feel the energy shift when you step in. It’s serene, beautiful, and just a little unsettling.

7. Only one known survivor

To date, only one person is known to have escaped from the depths of the mysterious Gunaa Caves. This chilling real-life event became the central plot of the 2024 Malayalam film Manjummel Boys, adding a dramatic layer to the already eerie reputation of the caves.
